Opera singer Pál Kövesdy emigrated to the United States in 1956. From 1964 he opened a gallery dealing with Hungarian avant-garde art in New York. His gallery has been the Continent Fine Art Gallery since 1964, the Matignon Gallery since 1972, and the Kövesdy Gallery since 1975. He considered the international presentation of Hungarian avant-garde artists his mission.
Part of his archive was left to the collection of the Kassák Museum in 2017, according to his will. The archive contains documents mainly related to the activities of Kövesdy’s galleries in New York, as well as literature on avant-garde and modernism.
This archive is currently being processed, researched and inventoried. It will be available for researchers in the near future.
