Michał Wenderski, PhD (Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań) “MA, De Stijl, Blok and others: On the Supranational Network of Avant-Garde Magazines and Formations”

In January 1924, the Flemish avant-garde magazine “Het Overzicht” published a list of its congenial modernist formations entitled “Het Netwerk” (The Network). As the title indicates, it is a remarkable representation of global artistic cooperation within the avant-garde network which exceeded national and linguistic frontiers, and bloomed somehow in contrary to the hostile national reception of the avant-garde. In my talk, I explore the nature of these international relationships exemplified by a look at two apparently distant areas, namely Poland and the Low Countries, and their relationships to the Hungarian avant-garde of the 1920s and 1930s.

Michał Wenderski, PhD, is an architect, translator and scholar of modern Dutch literature. Assistant professor at Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan, Poland, and head of a research project in the field of cultural mobility between Poland and the Low Countries. Author of a monograph “Cultural Mobility in the Interwar Avant-Garde Art Network: Poland, Belgium and the Netherlands” (Routledge, 2018) and several other publications on avant-garde literature, fine arts and architecture.
