WONDERFUL STORY?
An avant-garde couple: Erzsi Újvári and Sándor Barta
Greetings by Merse Pál Szeredi, Kassák Museum
Opening speech by Eszter Őze, art historian, KEMKI research associate
Date: Friday, 28 January 2022, 6 pm
Venue: Kassák Museum, Fő tér 1., 1033 Budapest
The exhibition examines the connections between art and society in the period between the outbreak of the First World War and the late 1930s, through the life’s work of two lesser-known figures of the Hungarian avant-garde, Erzsi Újvári and Sándor Barta. They were artists who perceived the potential for crossovers between fiction and reality, utopia and politics, and art and lifestyle. The recently-purchased archive of the artist couple and documents in the collections of the Petőfi Literary Museum and the Kassák Museum provide clues to understanding this lost world.
Curators: Sára Bagdi, Gábor Dobó, Merse Pál Szeredi
Consultant: Eszter Balázs
Design: Klára Rudas
The exhibition is on view until 22 May 2022.
